Grabango
Cashier-less CHecKout EXperIence
Grabango, a Berkeley, California-based startup, is the leading provider of checkout-free technology for existing, large-scale store chains. Grabango delivers a next-generation shopper experience and is the only enterprise-class, checkout-free solution on the market today. The Grabango platform is a fault-tolerant, edge computing network that accurately processes millions of simultaneous transactions. The system places no limits on who can enter the store, what can be sold there, or how the shelving is configured.
A shopper downloads the Grabango mobile app, creates an account, and adds their payment information. The shopper then shops and browses Grabango partnered stores. When they are done shopping, the shopper checks out at the Grabango badge out station with an auto-generated QR code in the Grabanago app. A little later, Grabango sends a receipt.

Badge Out Station
After the Industrial Design team was close to finalizing the design of the badge out station, I began working closely with the Electrical Engineer, to help design the sensory components. I put together a deck with guidelines, proposals, and references. I took inspiration from several science fiction movies, as concepts for lighting and sounds. We decided to keep the sounds simple for V1 of the badge out station.

Mobile App Screens
The Grabango mobile app is fairly simple. It is simply a way to associate the user to their shopping trip. A user simply has to create an account, allow permissions, add optional store accounts, and add payment information. Once the account is set up, the user has to simply badge out at the Grabango check out station on their way out.
I created a user flow to map out all of the user journeys and to inform which screens were necessary. Once the user flow was finalized, I began to work closely with the mobile developer to design the screens, components, and specifications.

Error Flows and Screens
A big part of user experience that is often overlooked is error states. Warnings and errors are particularly important for the payment part of the Grabango mobile app. If there is no payment method added to the user's account, Grabango is unable to charge the customer for their purchases. For payment errors, all use cases and points of failure were considered. The use cases, action required by the user, and how to notify the user were captured in a table. The flows were mapped before designing the screens.
